The Radioprotection Commission of the CIR is implementing a Radiological Patient Protection Program based on the fundamental principles: avoiding unjustified doses (Principle of Justification), optimizing practices to ensure that the doses involved are as low as reasonably achievable (Principle of Optimization), and determining reference levels. Although a recommendation may be justified if the reported benefits outweigh the disadvantages and is optimized according to technology, every effort will be made to ensure that the dose received by any individual is kept as low as possible.
This will ensure that medical practice does not unduly increase the risk of radiation exposure to the population. To achieve this, it is necessary to focus on the training of medical and technical personnel in Radiation Protection, the implementation of Quality Systems, and the establishment of an adequate structure for supervision and regulatory control.
Final Edition of Basic Safety Standards
IAEA: Final Edition of Basic Safety Standards. This document specifies the requirements for the protection of people and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation, as well as for the safety of radiation sources. The publication considers all circumstances of exposure to ionizing radiation, including those related to medical diagnosis.
Recently, the final edition of “Radiation Protection and Safety of Radiation Sources: International Basic Safety Standards” was published on the website of the International Atomic Energy Agency, IAEA.
The Basic Safety Standards (BSS) specify the requirements for the protection of people and the environment from the harmful effects of ionizing radiation, and for the safety of radiation sources. In the publication, all circumstances of exposure to ionizing radiation are considered, including those related to medical diagnosis.
This publication is the result of the joint efforts of eight organizations, including WHO, PAHO, IAEA, and the European Commission, and the CIR has been requested to disseminate it among its members and promote its implementation in the region.
