"200 Distinguished Figures in Radiology"
On Wednesday, November 5, the presentation of the book “200 Distinguished Figures in Radiology,” authored by Dr. Luis H. Ros Mendoza, will take place at the Illustrious Official College of Physicians of Zaragoza.
The book is based on a series of short biographies of distinguished radiologists who have passed away, which have been published monthly since 2009 in the bulletin of the Interamerican College of Radiology (CIR), an initiative of its founding editor Miguel Stoopen.
Character by character, in chronological order, we witness the most relevant milestones in radiology: the initial experiments with vacuum tubes, the discovery of X-rays, the description of natural radioactivity, the development of linear tomography and the image intensifier, technical advances in the field of breast imaging, the introduction of the principles of magnetic resonance and computed axial tomography, the development of vascular interventional radiology… also reflecting, in this historical progression, the evolution of this new discipline in our country: the precursors and pioneers, the founding of the initial Spanish Society of Radiology and Medical Electrology, as well as its journal, its subsequent definition as an independent specialty, and the birth and evolution of the modern fields of vascular radiology and neuroradiology.
Within its pages appear physicians, radiology technicians, physicists, engineers, researchers, Nobel laureates… We encounter the first woman considered a martyr of radiology, the orthopedic surgeon who authored the first book on radiology, the discoverers of the various imaging techniques, the first African American radiologist to pass the board examination in the specialty, and the first African American woman to lead a radiology department in her country. We also meet the first radiologist who faced a computer in a diagnostic challenge back in the 1970s, as well as the great innovators of the specialty.
Names that are part of the eponyms of many radiological signs, diseases, or medical instruments, authors of the classic radiology books that contributed to the training of a significant number of specialists.
n these portrayals of distinguished figures, the aim is not to be exhaustive, but rather to present in an engaging way not only their professional careers and contributions, but also their personal and human side. An added value of the book lies in the personal anecdotes that highlight this human aspect of the characters, making us feel especially close to them.
n this journey through history, the biographies are organized by chronological ages that adapt the brief history of radiology to the concepts of Ancient, Medieval, Modern, and Contemporary Ages, thus distinguishing different sections: first, a series of relevant figures are considered, the so-called fathers of medicine, whose fundamental contributions were essential for the evolution of medical science in its various facets; subsequently, the pioneers and discoverers of radiology, the stage of expansion of the discipline, the stage of technological revolution, and finally the digital era.
n sum, a work prepared with the intention of being useful and practical, as well as didactic, contributing to defining the most significant moments in the history and evolution of our specialty.
The book, published exclusively as a gift and not for profit, is available in its digital version to all radiologists, both Spanish and Latin American, who request it through SERAM or CIR.
Dr. Luis Ros Mendoza is Head of the Radiology Department at Miguel Servet University Hospital in Zaragoza and Full Professor at the university. He was awarded the Gold Medal of SERAM in 2024.
